Suggestions for Hospital Visitation

1.       Do not wear perfume, cologne or scented hair spray.

2.       Do not enter the room without knocking.

3.       Keep visits short, 5 to 15 minutes unless a family member has asked you to stay for an extended caregiving time.

4.       Return later or stand outside the door if a doctor or nurse is attending patient.

5.       Do not use the telephone in the room for personal calls.

6.       Do not assume that because the patient’s eyes are closed that he/she is sleeping.  When the patient has eyes closed, it may be an indicator that he wants quiet in the room.

7.       Do not bring small children unless the patient has requested it.

8.       Do not visit if you believe you have been exposed to colds, flu, etc.

9.       Wash your hands when you get to the patient’s room.

10.   Do not bring food into the hospital unless patient has requested a special food item and it is approved by the nurse.

11.   Patients receiving recovering from surgery are often bothered by fragrances and food odors.

12.   Don’t talk about other people’s illnesses and compare symptoms.

13.   Mirror the mood of the patient—if the patient is quiet and thoughtful, be the same way.  If they are talkative and upbeat, reflect that back.

14.   Do not criticize the hospital or personnel.

15.   Leave with a positive but not unrealistic message. (“I hope that you will rest well tonight” vs. “I know you’ll walk out of here soon.”)
