Camp Sunburst for Grieving Children

Camp Sunburst Program

Camp Sunburst Program provides the opportunity for children faced with both sudden and anticipated deaths to participate in grief groups, grow through interactive and art activities, and bond with others who have experienced similar issues These most vulnerable children are at risk for problems later in life if they are not able to find a way to incorporate their losses in ways that are physically and mentally healthy. Camp Sunburst is a first step to encourage open communication between parent and child, to give children specific tools to use when they are sad or when classmates make insensitive remarks.

For several years, Hospice of the Upstate has reached out to the community to provide a Grief Camp experience for children.  In collaboration with the Vista Care Hospice and OMH Hospice of the Foothills, we offer help to any child in the Upstate who has been touched by the loss of a loved one. Many of our campers have experienced multiple losses.

Measurable outcomes for participants include:

·        Describing healthy ways of coping with grief

·        Increasing the ability to communicate feelings with family

·        Identifying available support systems

·        Parents recognizing healthy vs. unhealthy grieving signs in their children

Camp Sunburst is open to all children in the Upstate counties of South Carolina (Abbeville, Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, and Pickens) and Hart County, GA who are in the 1st- 6th grade, and have lost a loved one.

If you have any questions please contact Lauren Bishop at ext 3132 or Pam Cox, Outreach Program Coordinator at 864-224-3358.
